August 11, 2023

Athleticism, teamwork and community spirit graced the shores of Dewey Beach as the SL24 UnLocke the Light foundation hosted its 3rd Annual Bump, Set, Light Volleyball Tournament at The Lighthouse.

Featuring amateurs and pros, the tournament was held July 30. It showcased remarkable sportsmanship and underscored the organization's mission to educate, assist and support youth with their mental health and well-being.

The tournament brought together volleyball enthusiasts, local supporters and advocates for mental health awareness for a day of friendly competition under the clear summer skies.

Participants from various skill levels and backgrounds formed 29 total teams. The competition was fierce yet respectful, as teams battled it out on The Lighthouse court and adjacent Dewey Beach sands. The spectators, many of whom brought beach chairs and picnic blankets or anchored their boats near shore, cheered enthusiastically for their favorite teams while enjoying the sun, sand and camaraderie.

"The success of this year's Bump, Set, Light Volleyball Tournament truly exceeded our expectations," said Zach Ryan, SL24 UnLocke the Light executive director, who said the total amount raised was $86,000. "The local lights of Dewey Beach shone bright as they more than doubled last year's fundraising total. [This amount] is certainly going to expand our impact, and shows so much hope and trust in our mission as we face together of one of the most pressing issues of our time."

The tournament was more than just a sports event; it was a platform for fostering conversations about mental health and raising awareness of the 24/7 peer support services at Sean's House in Newark. Throughout the day, Peer24 support staff, mental health facts and helpline information were available to attendees, emphasizing SL24 UnLocke the Light's mission to destigmatize mental health issues and provide support to those in need.

As the sun began to set, the finals of the tournament took center stage, showcasing the finest talent and teamwork of the day. Co-founder Chris Locke addressed the crowd to tell the story of his son Sean, lost to suicide just five years ago. The message was clear – it is OK to ask for help, and everyone is valuable.

The 3rd Annual Bump, Set, Light Volleyball Tournament's success was made possible by the support of  more than 100 sponsors, volunteers, participants and the Dewey Beach community. The SL24 UnLocke the Light team extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the momentous event.
