Society director to debut new maritime history book Nov. 1
Andrew Lyter, Historic Lewes/Lewes Historical Society executive director, will be on hand from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1, at the Lewistown Coffee-House to celebrate and sign copies of his newly released book, “Going Among English Sailors: American Tars Aboard HMS Belvidera, 1809-1814.”
The coffee-house, located on the Historic Lewes Town Campus at 110 Shipcarpenter St., will host this special event featuring a 5:30 p.m. toast and a short talk by the author.
“Going Among English Sailors” delves into the untold stories of the 22 American sailors serving aboard the British naval ship HMS Belvidera during the Napoleonic Wars – the very ship that bombarded Lewes April 6 and 7, 1813.
Drawing from extensive archival materials in the National Archives of the United Kingdom and other sources, Lyter focuses specifically on those Americans who were aboard the Belvidera during the War of 1812. His detailed exploration captures the sailors' tumultuous lives before, during and after their service, offering a nuanced perspective on this chapter in maritime history.
Lyter’s work is the culmination of years of scholarship and hands-on experience shaped by his graduate studies at the University of Portsmouth and his time aboard the British brigantine Lord Nelson. His book offers a fresh, immersive perspective, blending meticulous historical research with practical, lived experience.
The book launch will take place in conjunction with Historic Lewes’ monthly First Friday Community Night, and attendees will also be invited to try a playful, cherry-filled spirit crafted for just for the occasion, the Chocolate Cherry Bombardment. Guests on this special First Friday will have a chance to enjoy a lively evening including colonial music and interactive experiences, and celebrate Andrew Lyter’s latest contribution to maritime history.
