In partnership with the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, Sussex County Council took a step to secure a matching grant to conduct an outdoor recreational-use feasibility study for a 17-acre parcel on Herring Creek near Angola that the county acquired last summer. The parcel is situated between Sarah Run and Chapel Branch, two tributaries feeding into Herring Creek, a key waterway in the Inland Bays area.

At its Nov. 30 meeting, council approved a resolution authorizing the center to apply for a $37,944 matching grant from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Trails Program. In addition, council approved an expenditure of $15,000 to support the application.

The parcel near Route 24, purchased for $970,000 with county open-space funds, contains 11 acres of mixed shrubs, trees and wetlands, and 6 acres of farmland.

The study will include the feasibility of amenities, such as a kayak launch, where they should be located, cost estimates and a final site plan. It will also explore ecological and restoration opportunities including planting of native grasses, reforestation, wetlands enhancement and forest management on the parcel.

“We are not committed to anything. We are just exploring,” said county engineer Hans Medlarz during a presentation to council.
