Sussex Academy softball comes up short at Charter

The Sussex Academy softball squad finished its 2024 season with a 5-1 loss to Charter School of Wilmington in the first round of the state tournament.

The Force players were first to get on the board in the second inning when Ella Muffley connected for an RBI single.

The Seahawks came back in the top of the third when Carson Gesuero hit a sac fly to score the tying run. The tie was broken in the bottom of the fourth when Natalie Nyucz went yard over the center-field fence to give the Force a 2-1 lead.

The Force added three more insurance runs in the sixth inning. 

Gesuero led the Seahawks with one RBI, while Rogue Garcia, Makenna Blades, Delainie Monitzer, Ryan Lowe and Caroline White each picked up a hit.

Gesuero went the distance in the circle, giving up eight hits while striking out five batters.

The Force senior pitcher Kate Hoban went the distance, earning the win for her team. She struck out five batters and gave up five hits.

Charter sophomore Ella Muffley had two hits and drove in a run. Abby Goodwin also had two hits. Reena Patel and Sophia Johnston hit a single apiece. Natalie Nycz, Elizabeth Terranova and Madeline Oyerly each had an RBI in the contest.

He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
