Sussex County Republican Women’s Club celebrates 70 years

October 15, 2022

The banquet hall at Mulligan’s Pointe in Georgetown buzzed with energy Sept. 28 as Republican candidates and activists joined Sussex County Republican Women’s Club members in celebrating 70 years of advocacy and charitable giving in lower Delaware.

Marilyn Booker, club president and Sussex County GOP chair, opened ceremonies with observations on how involved women have been in the political process since the club’s founding in 1952. This was the goal of founder Lillian Martin. Between the current House and Senate, women represent 27% of the membership. Of note are the significant gains Republican women made in the House in the most recent election cycle. Of the 27 newly elected female representatives, two-thirds are Republicans. “How is that for taking an active role in the political process!” said Booker.

Representatives from the Delaware House and Senate presented the club with proclamations signed by their members.

Presenting the tribute from the Senate side was Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown. Presenting for the House were Reps. Ron Gray, R-Selbyville; Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown; and Rich Collins, R-Millsboro.

Festivities continued with a rousing vocal performance by Greg Fuller, Republican candidate for Sussex County Register of Wills. One of his two selections, “I Did it God’s Way,” left not a dry eye in the house.

After a dinner of 1950s favorites – barbecue chicken, hot dogs and cheeseburgers, ambrosia salad and green beans Amandine – 16 Delaware Republican candidates came up to the podium, one at a time, to receive campaign donations and say a few words.

As the event concluded, attendees all left with high hopes for significant Republican victories statewide on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
