Sussex Republican Women host Delaware GOP committee

November 16, 2018

The Sussex County Republican Women’s Club held a dinner meeting Oct. 24 at Kings Creek Country Club. Guest speakers were Mike Harrington, chairman of the DEGOP and Michele Rollins, head of the DEGOP finance committee.

Rollins spoke about early immigrants coming to this country hoping to create better lives for themselves and their families. They were eager to become Americans, free to practice their religions, support viewpoints that differed from the politics and policies of the times openly and unafraid, and protect themselves from harm as noted in the Second Amendment. They respected the United Staes flag and what it represents, and learned to love their new homeland.

With the election looming near, Rollins stated that a one-party system has no checks and balances. “We must be able to elect officials who respect and are willing to stand up for our core values. With the great slate of GOP candidates we have running, we can do great things,” she said. One such candidate who attended the meeting was Jim De Martino, running for state representative in District 14.

Harrington agreed with the need for more Republican representation in the Legislature to see that the checks and balances of a true two-party system are at work. Bills that pass in the late hours of the night without benefit of hearing opposing views are hurting this state, he said, and Republican leadership can make a big difference in the quality of life in Delaware. He thanked the Republican women’s clubs of the state that support GOP candidates. A former state representative, Harrington has been prominent in business and Delaware politics for many years. An early supporter of President Trump, he became Kent County chair of the Trump campaign. In April 2017, Harrington was elected chair of the Delaware GOP.

SCRWC is proud to support the Salvation Army and its Christmas Stocking Project. SCRWC member Natalie Popham spoke about the project, which collects and distributes gifts to needy families throughout Sussex County. As co-chairs of the Caring for America Committee, Popham and Jane Thompson are working with the Salvation Army to help make this season a joyous time for many children. The Salvation Army office in Seaford accepts unwrapped toys for children of all ages, as well as monetary donations which will be used to purchase additional gifts for families in need. Volunteers from local area churches also assist staff in sorting and distributing donations.
