Sussex seniors dance, feast at CHEER picnic
More than 235 county seniors and staff attended the CHEER picnic and festival Sept 3 at Trap Pond State Park near Laurel for lunch, dancing, contests and games with popular DJ Sky Brady playing the music. This was CHEER’s first Sussex County-wide, in-person event since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
CHEER, open to seniors age 50 and older, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. CHEER provides a variety of services and programs to more than 30,000 Sussex County seniors, including meals on wheels, transportation services, in-home personal assistance, medical appointment transportation, support groups, nutrition services and a traveling grocery mini-mart. CHEER operates activity centers in Georgetown, Lewes, Long Neck, Milton, Ocean View, Roxana and Greenwood, along with the Sand Hill Adult Day Program and the Warren L. and Charles Allen Jr. CHEER Community Center in Georgetown. The 24,000-square-foot center houses CHEER’s new kitchen, hair salon, games room and fitness center. The multipurpose banquet room is available to rent.
