Three new films opening at Cinema Art Theater April 8, 9

April 6, 2022

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “The Rose Maker,” a colorful, touching comedy about growing new creations in mature soil, starting Friday, April 8.

Artisanal horticulturalist Eve Vernet (Catherine Frot) honors her father’s legacy by continuing the family business, breeding and growing unique roses that compete in showcases all over France. But Eve’s approach struggles to compete with the mass market production from her corporate rivals. With the business facing imminent bankruptcy or liquidation, Eve’s trusted secretary, Vera, makes a last-ditch effort to turn things around by hiring three new employees from a prison rehabilitation program behind Eve’s back. They are misunderstood outcasts with fresh ideas, strong work ethics, and absolutely no gardening skills. In a desperate attempt to save the business, the new team comes up with a perilous plan, and Eve unexpectedly discovers new parts of life that are worth nurturing.

Also opening April 8 is “Mothering Sunday,” a romantic drama based on the novel of the same name by Graham Swift about forbidden love in post-World War l England.

On a warm spring day in 1924, house maid and foundling Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) finds herself alone on Mother’s Day. Her employers, Mr. and Mrs. Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman), are out, and she has the rare chance to spend quality time with her secret lover, Paul (Josh O’Connor). Paul is from the manor house nearby and has been Jane’s long-term love despite the fact that he’s engaged to be married to another woman who is a childhood friend and daughter of his parents’ friends. But events that neither can foresee will change the course of Jane’s life forever.

Returning to the Cinema Art Theater for one screening at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 9, is the 2022 Academy Award Winner for Best International Film, “Drive My Car,” an engrossing drama that tells the story of an aging Japanese man as he travels the path of love, loss, acceptance and peace.

Two years after his wife's unexpected death, Yusuke Kafuku, a renowned stage actor and director, receives an offer to direct a production at a theater festival in Hiroshima. There, he meets Misaki Watari, a taciturn young woman assigned as his chauffeur. As the production's premiere approaches, tensions mount among the cast and crew, especially between Yusuke and Koji Takatsuki, a handsome TV star who shares an unwelcome connection to Yusuke's late wife. Forced to confront painful truths raised from his past, Yusuke begins – with the help of his driver – to face the haunting mysteries his wife left behind. The film is the winner of three prizes at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, including Best Screenplay, and winner of 2021 Golden Globe for best non-English language film. There will be a 15-minute intermission midway through the film.

Admission for all films is $8 for members and $11 for nonmembers. Customers can find complete screening information and purchase admission online at rehobothfilm.com. Available seats will be sold at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
