Traffic light needed at Route 1/Cave Neck Road

June 2, 2023

I am writing because a number of people are voicing their concern on Next Door about the removal of traffic lights on Coastal Highway. Those of us who live off Cave Neck Road are very concerned.

It is difficult now to make a left turn onto Cave Neck Road going north on Coastal Highway. We have to wait until there is a break in the traffic from the light that currently is at the intersection of Route 16. When that light is removed, Coastal Highway will be like a speedway (it actually already is), and we will not be able to cross the highway to get to our homes without risking our lives. The only other option is to go down Route 9 and take Sweetbriar Road back to Cave Neck Road. It's a long way around, but we may not have a choice.

When the construction is finished at the Route 16 intersection, the current plan is to start construction of whatever DelDOT is planning to do at Cave Neck Road. It will be a nightmare with cars flying down the highway at 60 to 70 mph since there will be no traffic lights to stop the cars. There likely will be orange cones redirecting traffic at Cave Neck Road and highway vehicles everywhere. The more I think about it, the more horrified I become. If they had to go down this path, DelDOT should have started with the Cave Neck intersection.
