Chelsea Bristow, Realtor, of the Carrie Lingo Team, will host the fifth annual Trees of Cheer event Saturday, Nov. 29, to bring holiday joy to families in need.
Community members have the opportunity to celebrate the season by decorating trees for families in need in the Cape Henlopen School District, as well as for children undergoing medical treatment at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington.
The event is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 29, at the Beacon Inn, 514 E. Savannah Road, Lewes. To accommodate participants who need extra space and less stimulation this year, an inclusive hour will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., with a limited number of spots available.
Last year, more than 80 trees were decorated at the event. In addition, $5,000 was raised for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Delaware facility in Wilmington, covering the cost of a family room for a year.
This year, the event goal is to donate 60 trees, with more than 40 going to Cape families, and raise monetary donations for the Ronald McDonald House.
Bristow said this event is one of her favorite parts of the holidays.
“So many of us take the joy and cheer of the holiday season for granted. For those undergoing medical treatment or having surgeries, that joy can be hard to come by,” she said. “While they have the support of the Ronald McDonald House, it just isn’t the same as celebrating at home. This event is just one way that we can bring back a sense of joy and normalcy during a difficult time. The kids coming into the house are able to pick a tree to keep to brighten up their room. In addition, watching the community come together and teach kids to give back — that act of service is irreplaceable.”
The event, which includes all trees and holiday decor, is also fun for those participating in decorating the trees. Hot chocolate and cookies are served by Santa’s elves, and Santa may even be making an appearance.
Sponsorships are now being accepted. To attend and decorate a tree, a registration fee of $60 includes all needed supplies. Reserving early is encouraged. For those who cannot attend, donations can support the purchase of decor and trees.
