Unpaved connections will discourage cut-through traffic

July 21, 2023

In response to your editorial regarding connected communities, I feel that the concern comes from residents who fear that interconnection will only create more traffic in their once-quiet community. Too often these connected communities are used as a cut-through to save time or beat traffic snarls. With all the road construction going on, very often motorists will cut through another community to avoid delays. Prime example are motorists who cut through the Independence community to avoid construction traffic.

Wherever possible, connective communities should not be paved roads to allow the constant flow of vehicles that wish to save time. I propose that a portion of the “connecting road” not be paved, but a compacted, large-gravel road (typically used on construction sites) be implemented so that fire trucks and emergency vehicles can pass when there is a true emergency.
