Vaccination event at The Starboard offers crushes to participants

Dewey Beach restaurant teams up with state to provide COVID-19 shots

A COVID-19 vaccination event held June 5 at The Starboard in Dewey Beach offered a free orange crush to anyone over 21 who received the shot.

Padraig Loftus of Bethany Beach, a 2018 Sussex Academy grad, said his school, Villanova University, requires the vaccination. He said he was happy to get the “one and done” Johnson & Johnson shot.

Jimmy O’Conor, owner of Woody’s Dewey Beach Bar & Grill, said he was already vaccinated, but he accompanied his employees Maddie Kelly and Josh Trout while they received their shots - and their complimentary orange crushes.

The Starboard owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery said the restaurant worked with Delaware Public Health, Delaware Emergency Management Agency and Delaware National Guard to provide the vaccination event.

Those vaccinated received a coupon for a free orange crush to be used the same day or anytime until Labor Day, Montgomery said, noting that officials told him about 40 people were vaccinated at the event.

“Which they say is a good number at this point,” Montgomery said. “We were happy that it worked out and to provide the opportunity for those who wanted to be vaccinated.”
