Vietnam Veterans of America chapter presents honors

The Vietnam Veterans of America of Sussex County Chapter 1105 announced awards and presentations to outstanding citizens and organizations in recognition of their service to the local community and the country.

At the March meeting, Chapter 1105 hosted a visit from Jack McManus, VVA national president; along with Ted Wilkerson, District 2 commissioner; Paul Davis, VVA state council president; and selected members of Chapter 805 from Kent County. McManus and Wilkerson both received Quilts of Valor for their military service. Honorary life membership certificates were also awarded to Dan Matta of Schell Brothers; Zack Evans, Mountaire Farms community relations manager; Phil Plylar, Mountaire Farms president; and Dr. Romina Thomas, VA Sussex County physician.

Chapter 1105 First Vice President George Stone presided over the National Vietnam War Veterans Day ceremony March 29 at The Circle in Georgetown. Various state and local dignitaries participated, and Chapter 1105 members and other veterans and relatives also attended.

At the end of May, the chapter was part of a Back the Blue ceremony with Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, at The Circle in Georgetown. During the ceremony and in the days following, Rodger Rose, chapter president, presented certificates of appreciation to State Police Troops 4, 5 and 7 in addition to the Department of Correction, Capitol Police and other similar agencies.
