American Legion Post 17 seeks volunteers, donors
March 28, 2019

The American Legion family of Post 17 will host the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall from Thursday, May 16, to Monday, May 20, at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes.

The moving wall is a half-size replica of the Washington, D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial which honors the more than 58,000 soldiers soldiers who died serving this country in the Vietnam War.

“The Vietnam Wall stands as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that servicemen and -women made and helps to heal the wounds from that war,” said Ed Bergen, commander of American Legion Post 17. “The moving wall was created to allow people from across America who are unable to make the trip to Washington, D.C. the opportunity to visit the monument in their hometown.”

An Escort of Honor is planned for Thursday morning upon the arrival of the Moving Wall at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry grounds. Vietnam War-era veterans will assemble the wall panels to begin the five-day tribute. Various ceremonies, speakers, information and assistance will be offered at the site. Food, fellowship and historic displays will be available at American Legion Post 17 nearby, and all are welcome. Further details will be announced.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall is being hosted by the American Legion family of Post 17 in observance of the 100th Anniversary of the American Legion, the launch of the Lewes Military Service Street Banner program and Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 18.

“We are so excited for the opportunity to bring the moving wall to Lewes so that all can experience it and honor our fallen heroes,” said Auxiliary President Murt Foos. “Right now, we’re really trying to build community support, and are looking for sponsors and volunteers to assist us with bringing this special monument to Lewes.”

This is a free exhibit – a gift to veterans and the community from the American Legion family of Post 17 – and the effort is 100 percent volunteer-driven. Although Post 17 is grateful for the outpouring of community support to date, any and all offerings of time, products and tax-deductible donations are still needed.
