Wags, Whiskers and Wine set at Nassau Valley Vineyards June 6

June 4, 2019

The Delaware Humane Association has a simple mission: Making Friends for Life. With headquarters in Wilmington and an adoption center in Rehoboth, DHA saves hundreds of dog and cat lives a year. The animals rescued by DHA often come from kill shelters in other states, and are first cared for at the DHA headquarters in Wilmington where they are assessed, given needed inoculations and treated for any existing medical or behavioral problems. All the animals transported to the Rehoboth center are up-to-date on shots, spayed/neutered, and ready for adoption.

DHA adoptees are steadfast friends who help their families in a multitude of ways. Two recent DHA Rehoboth adoption stories tell of the many rewards of pet adoption.

Otis and his brother, Owen, came to DHA Rehoboth when they were 5-month-old puppies. A Rehoboth family adopted Owen within a week of his arrival. But Otis had to wait another week before a family from Silver Spring, Md. fell in love with him and took him home. For some months, 10-year old Jayla had been having difficulty sleeping, and then Otis cuddled up in bed with her. Now, Jayla sleeps through the night with her arms around her buddy, Otis.

Saidi was 2 months old when she arrived at DHA Rehoboth. Her new family had a very specific need - both the mom and the daughter have severe gluten allergies. Saidi is now in training to be a service dog, so that she can warn her family if a food contains gluten. “Service dogs have to have a certain personality and willingness to please, and not every dog has that. When Saidi, formerly known as Cinco, came through the door, I knew she would have what it takes to become a service dog,” said Meg Searcey, manager of the Rehoboth adoption center. When she isn’t in training, Saidi spends her time playing with the family’s four children, even accompanying them on camping trips.

Support the DHA mission and have a fun-filled evening 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.,Thursday, June 6, at its fundraiser, Wags, Whiskers and Wine, at Nassau Valley Vineyards. Bring the family dog, bid on great auction prizes, mingle with guests and their pets, enjoy great food and drink, and start the summer in style.
