William G. Sing Jr., veteran, retired teacher
William G. Sing Jr. of Wilmington passed away peacefully Saturday, May 24, 2025, with his family beside him. He was born July 10, 1947, in Lewes, son of the late William Sing Sr. and Josephine (Merkel) Sing.
Bill grew up in Lewes, graduating from Lewes High School Class of 1965. He was known for his athletic ability and good sense of humor. After high school, Bill enlisted in the Coast Guard, where he was a member of the Honor Guard. He served from 1967-72 and was stationed in Florida, North Carolina, and Alaska. Alaska was his favorite. Bill was honorably discharged but chose to continue his service in the Delaware Air National Guard from 1976-99, retiring as chief master sergeant.
Bill graduated from the University of Delaware, receiving both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. He taught elementary school in the Red Clay School District for 37 years until he retired in 2006. He impacted the lives of so many students with his unique teaching style.
Bill was an athlete his entire life. He enjoyed playing and watching any sport, basketball, football, baseball, volleyball, pickleball, and ping pong. Bill was a member of the national gold medal-winning Delaware Senior Olympic Team in volleyball. He was an avid fan of the Phillies and Cowboys.
Bill loved traveling with his wife, Mary. They enjoyed cruising to the Caribbean, Panama Canal, New England, Canada, Europe, and especially Alaska. He loved animals and had a special relationship with his dogs, Taku, Nikki and Ziva. Music was a big part of Bill’s life. His favorite artist was Gordon Lightfoot.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary; his sister, Bernadette Pierce (Tennessee); his brother, Mike (Rehoboth); and his sister-in-law, Cathy (Lewes). He was predeceased by his brother, Tony (Lewes). He was a loving uncle and mentor to his many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Cadia Healthcare Pike Creek and Christiana Hospital for the kind and thoughtful care given to him.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington. A private committal service will be held Wednesday, June 11, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the charity of choice.
