Work continues at Frederick D. Thomas Middle School

New Lewes facility set to open to students in fall 2024

Work is well underway on the new Frederick D. Thomas Middle School, set to open to students in fall 2024 on the site of the former Shields Elementary in Lewes.

Named after educator Frederick D. Thomas, the first African American administrator in the Cape Henlopen School District, the school was approved by referendum in March 2018.

Current Beacon Principal Dave Frederick has been tapped to lead Frederick D. Thomas Middle School, which will be the district’s third middle school and will alleviate crowding at Beacon and Mariner middle schools.

The new building sits just across Sussex Drive from Lewes Elementary School, which opened to students in April 2022. The two schools will share a campus that stretches from Savannah Road to DuPont Avenue.
