‘Molds, Mushrooms, and Medicines’ author talk set April 2

March 28, 2024

Dr. Nicholas Money will join the Lewes Public Library’s Science and Society lecture series for an online discussion of his new book, “Molds, Mushrooms, and Medicines,” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, via Zoom.

Money will explain the amazing ways in which humans’ health and well-being are affected by fungi and highlight new research into the human mycobiome, which is formed by a hidden universe of microscopic yeasts and molds that live in people’s bodies. He will also discuss the importance of fungal medicines, the controversial use of magic mushrooms to treat depression, and the wider dependence on the vital roles fungi play in nature.

Money is a professor of biology at Miami University in Ohio and the author of many books, including, “The Rise of Yeast: How the Sugar Fungus Shaped Civilization,” which was featured in the 2018 History Book Festival in Lewes, and “Mushrooms: A Natural and Cultural History.”

To register for the online event, go to tinyurl.com/LPLScienceSpring24 or call the library at 302-645-2733.

Participants are encouraged to support the author by purchasing a copy of the book from local independent bookstore Browseabout Books.

The Lewes Public Library’s Science and Society - Making Sense of the World Around Us lecture series is co-organized and moderated by Colin Norman, former news editor at Science; Fred Dylla, executive director emeritus of the American Institute of Physics and author of “Scientific Journeys”; and Lynda Dylla, former public information officer at the Jefferson Laboratory and U.S. Department of Energy.
