Band Highlight #2

105 Days to Firefly

Band Highlight #2

Chance the Rapper – First a confession. As it relates to rap I am unfortunately one of those people who thinks all of the new stuff sounds mostly the same and in general I don’t like. This is hideously untrue and unfair, and it’s the same sentiment that I deplore when other people say it about rock/alt/pop. Usually I’ll go into attack mode and ask them when they turned 70….

Feel free to envision me shaking my head at myself here. My only excuse is that there are only so many hours in the day and it’s hard enough for me to keep up with music as it is, adding another genre would be tough. As proof of my failure to keep my ears open I present Chance the Rapper. Chance’s songs do have a different sound and enough of a different lyric content that I have found myself pretty stoked when they pop up on the playlist. I suggest Juke Jam, All Night, and No Problem as a good intro.

Weezer – Somehow these guys manage to keep going strong. On their latest album they pull off something that is really tough for bands that have been around for 20 years. They created new music that stays true to their original sound without sounding like all of their old songs. Usually bands head in a totally different direction and alienate half their fan base, or the new songs are just a regurgitation of the earlier songs everyone liked.

I’m digging this album and having never seen them in concert before will put them at the high end of the list pending final schedule release. Songs on the new album I recommend checking out are - Thank God for Girls, Summer Elaine and Drunk Dori (Awesome song title…), and if for some reason your new to Weezer check out Say it Ain’t So, Buddy Holly, and Beverly Hills.

Cold Roses – While they didn’t make the original jump out list, if you are into blues rock, then you should check these guys out. Could be a pretty fun show, especially if you like horns in your music, which I do! Stole this quote from their facebook page… Whoever said rock and roll was dead must have just given up.

You should check out - Lose That Man and Got No Lovin’ as an introduction to their music.

*repeat repeat – Talk about a band that’s hard to classify, yikes! The song Mostly (which I’m a big fan of) is towards the alt/pop side of things, Not the One has a 60’s psychedelic vibe with surf guitar sounds.

They classify their sound as Surf Rock Candy. Who am I to argue? If you are looking for something that’s fun and different you should check these guys out.

Jettyrat’s Five on the Side interview with Future Generations up next.

Until next time... Jettyrat out. Happy listening.
