Comically Cinema: Doomed!, this month’s incarnation of Revival House, is bringing our own mini-Comic-Con to the Milton Theatre. No comic con extravaganza would be complete without a cosplay contest! We encourage attendees to don their best comic or superhero inspired costumes and the audience favorite will win their choice of ten comic books from Ogre’s Grove. If you haven’t had time to plan out your costume yet and need some inspiration, or just need some help with the finishing touches, we’ve got some tips to help you out.
1. Have fun with it.
It’s easy to search for cosplay inspiration online and get intimidated by people who seem to take it very seriously. While it’s awesome to dedicate hours and hundreds of dollars to perfecting your costume, you don’t have to quite commit to that level to still pull something great together. That person who painted their entire body blue to pull off Mystique might look awesome but you don’t have to clog your pores and ruin our theatre seats to have a good time.
2. Go obscure.
Is your heart set on dressing up as Captain Ultra but you’re worried no one else will share your affinity for him? Go for it! If they recognize you, you’ve made a new friend, if they don’t, they’ll ask and you’ve at least made a new acquaintance. Or mortal enemy. If you’re into that kind of thing.
The exactly one person at San Diego Comic-Con dressed as DC’s “Deadman”.
3. Work with what you’ve got.
While it’s tempting to go all out and spend next month’s rent on Etsy, it’s not always necessary. Evaluate your closet and your craft supplies to see what you can come up with. You’ll get triple satisfaction from having a cool costume, one that you made, and you won’t have to live off of beef ramen for the next month. Your wallet and kidneys will thank you
4. Mix it up.
Cosplay is all about creativity and your options are endless. You can create gender-bending costumes, futuristic costumes, mix-up multiple characters, create a pun, whatever your little nerd heart desires. Don’t feel bound by the confines of the canon.
5. Bring your friends.
If you really want to ratchet up the awesome-factor of your cosplay, make it a group cosplay. Having a group of friends to help fully develop your cosplay dreams is guaranteed to be a hit. It also helps to have a friend for moral support in case you have to make an emergency CVS run in full costume, because we all know those only happen after you’ve applied glue stick to your eyebrows and adhered sequins to your face.
Revival House Comically Cinema: Doomed! will be March 16th at 6 PM at the Milton Theatre. Tickets are $10 and $5 for students. Tickets may be purchased in advance at revivalhousetheater.com
