Carlton W. Allen Sr., man of strong faith

July 15, 2016

Carlton W. Allen Sr., 55, of Jacksonville, Fla. and formerly of Lewes, passed away suddenly, Sunday, July 3, 2016, at home.  Born in Lewes, Nov. 7, 1960, to Frances (McDaniel) Allen and the late Alfred W. Allen Sr., he was the youngest of nine siblings.
Carlton graduated from Cape Henlopen High School in 1979.  While there, he ran track, played football, and excelled in basketball.  He came from an athletic family, was a good student, and had a magnetic personality and many friends.

Following graduation, he attended and graduated summa cum laude from Bethune Cookman College (University), Daytona Beach, Fla., where he met and married the love of his  life and best friend, Terri.  From this union of 33 years were born three children. Mr. Allen resided in Jacksonville all of his adult life where he was gainfully employed for a number of years with the State Farm Insurance Company, and he wasn't afraid of work - being a Christian man of strong faith and devotion - to his family and church family.  He was always willing to give the best advice and help others whenever he could, and he loved helping to make that positive difference in others' lives through his inspiring conversations and youth pastoral duties in his church and beyond. Therefore, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially Terri, although we know God had a much greater plan for him.
In addition to his father, Carlton was preceded in death by brothers Anthony "Tony" and David Allen.  He is survived and mourned by his devoted wife Terri Allen; sons Carlton Jr. and Zachary Allen; daughter, Angelica Allen; and two grandchildren, all of Jacksonville; mother, Frances M. Allen of Lewes; mother-in-law, Carolyn Thompson of Jacksonville; sisters Gloria A. Harmon (Wardell) and Alfreda "Wendy" C. Hanner, both of New Castle; brothers Alfred W. Allen Jr. (Vonnie) of Portsmouth, Va., William "Billy" Allen of New Castle, James "Jimmy" Allen  (Karen) of Stanton, and Richard Allen of Danville, Va.; special cousin, Oliver E. Allen of Georgetown; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, fellow parishioners, classmates and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Allen were held in Jacksonville July 9. Iin addition, family will greet friends at a memorial service to be held Saturday, July 23, at 3 p.m., at Friendship Baptist Church, 500 W. 4th St., Lewes, where the Rev. George H. Edwards is pastor.
