Democratic candidate shouldn’t be ignored

August 22, 2016

Is democracy dying in Delaware? At a recent Democratic function welcoming Congressman Carney to Sussex County as he makes his run for governor, I witnessed an attempt to suffocate democracy by the Sussex County Delaware Democratic Committee.

On a warm but breezy night by the canal in Lewes many registered Democratic hopefuls had gathered to greet constituents as well as be publicly recognized by Carney. So he wouldn’t forget any registered candidate, the congressman graciously turned this duty over to the Sussex County Democratic Committee chair.

Mitch Crane proceeded to introduce registered candidates, excluding Don Peterson, who is challenging incumbent Pete Schwartzkopf from the 14th Representative District. The Carney campaign as well as the Sussex County chairman knew Don Peterson was present as he had talked with Rep. Carney as well as many other Democrats. When I asked about the deliberate omission, Mr. Crane said “I was just doing my job.”

Are the rules of the Sussex County Delaware Democratic Committee so written as to stifle any primary bid? If so, how unfortunate for us, the voters. I want transparency. I want inclusion. I want a Democratic party and a Democratic representative from the 14th RD who plays fair and trusts the people to make the right choice.

I’m voting for Don Peterson, Democratic candidate from the 14th Representative District in the primary Sept. 13.
I challenge the Democratic voters in the 14th Representative District to come out strong and show the Democratic Party that voters won’t be suffocated by the old ways.

I’m for change. I’m for Don Peterson.
