77 Days to Firefly
The daily lineups are out, and they are at best moderately useful. :) It does get you excited for the bands you want to see, but it doesn’t really mean anything until they release the actual schedule with stages and times. But for now we’ll play along and be excited and pray that none of the bands we really want to see play at the same time.
Last year was the first time that I went up for Thursday night. It ended up being one of my favorite nights. Thursday is the perfect appetizer. You get to ease your way into the scene without the massive crowds. The crowds are pretty minimal all things considered, and the first shows are out of the heat of the main day. Last year I sawThe Arkells on a main stage and then again at the Coffeehouse, phenomenal. I also saw Jack Garrett, a huge surprise show, so good live. If there is anyone you think you want to see on Thursday then you should definitely go. And…just so you know, there are bands you want to see on Thursday this year.
Must sees on Thursday – Kaleo (one of the bands I didn’t see last year due to conflict), OAR, Glass Animals, and K Flay.
Kaleo – This band I heard on the way by to another show last year and was totally bummed I couldn’t see them. Guitar heavy, strong vocals. Southern sound but not southern rock. Definitely planning on catching them this year.
OAR- Been a fan of this band’s music for a long time. I have never seen them live. I’ve heard mixed reviews from friends who have, ranging from awesome to meh. I’m going to go with awesome and find out for myself. They have a new album out that is a little bit country leaning but I like most of the songs I’ve heard.
Glass Animals - What a perfect band for Thursday night, mellow but not sleepy mellow, a cool dance vibe mellow. I have no idea what to expect from them in a live concert but more than willing to find out.
K Flay – Imagine the love child of Mazzy Star and Trent Reznor, with modern pop influences who is quite sure the only way to write music is to bare her soul. I’m pretty sure this show will not be classified as mellow or PG. It should be raw, and raucus, full of industrial synth and energy. Totally looking forward to it!
Take a chance bands – Maggie Rogers, Elohim, Wilderado, and Salt Cathedral
Maggie Rogers – Singer songwriter, very cool lyrics, awesome voice, would be a cool coffeehouse or treehouse show. Semi local girl from Easton, MD.
Elohim – Haunting pop band. Can’t quite put my finger on what I like about them. But whenever it comes up on the playlist, I dig it. Especially like the song Sensations.
Wilderado – I really like “Talking About Love to a Cigarette” and would see them out of curiosity but not really sure what the concert would be like in a festival setting.
Salt Cathedral - Such a pretty voice. This band is from South America, don’t imagine this will be a high energy concert but if you like strong female vocals this could be worth a flyer.
Most of these bands are highlighted on my Firefly 2017 Singles playlist. You can check out the early singles that I am digging here –->https://open.spotify.com/user/jettyrat/playlist/35ZQMDavvAiKBMF16k2AXf
Until next time... Jettyrat out. Happy listening.
