The outer reaches of Lewes dining

As a preemptive strike against itchy email trigger fingers (you know who you are!), this week's column spotlights Lewes restaurants that are not located downtown. This is Part 2 of the collectible two-part series (Franklin Mint, eat your heart out). Cut it out of the paper and treasure it forever.

The Villages of Five Points is home to SoDel Concepts' Fish On. Dusk on the patio with Mo's steam buns and a bowl of chowder is the stuff of legend. Around the corner is the always reliable Arena's Café (nine locations and going strong) – get the California Club Dude (it's a sandwich, ladies) and the nachos. The perpetually festive Greene Turtle combines bar grub with live entertainment and nightly specials. Right next door is the Touch of Italy Bakery. I don't have to tell you about the cookies and pastries, and the bread couldn't be fresher. And you can buy their fresh mozzarella there too.

Back out on Route 9/Savannah Road is Mara dePace's Villa Sorrento. Foodie picks include the chopped antipasto salad and the stuffed shells. Diagonally across Savannah Road is the new Kaisy's Delights. Their busy drive-thru is ground-zero for good coffee, breakfast sandwiches and the addictive kaiserschmarrn. What!?! Go and find out. I didn't take you to raise....

Slightly west on Coastal Highway is the bustling Surf Bagel. Get the chicken salad or the Taylor Pork Roll, egg & cheese on a toasted sesame bagel. Just a bit to the south is Alex Kotanides' Pat's Family Pizza. Alex' "Greek pizza" has a loyal following, along with friendly counter service and surprisingly good cheesesteaks and soups.

Over the drawbridge and through the woods is the landmark Beacon Motel that is now home to the Pig & Publican restaurant. Sister to popular Pickled Pig Pub in Rehoboth, it's got the same easy-going comfort-food vibe and craft program. And free parking! Keep driving toward the beach and you'll encounter the Dairy Queen. A sunset stroll on Lewes beach with a cone slowly melting over your hand will cure whatever ails ya'.

Drive along the water to the ferry terminal for dockside delights at On The Rocks. Charcoal grilled burgers and dogs blend with your choice of brews while you're sittin' on the dock of the bay, watchin' the ships roll in ... you get it. (If you don't, just read on.)

Jump onto King's Highway from the ferry to see the Fins Hospitality Group's new Big Oyster Brewery. Across the street is the always reliable Mr. P's Pizzeria where the wood-fired pies are the thing to get. And wait until you see their selection of crafts! Speaking of beer, continue toward Coastal Highway to visit La Vida Hospitality's Crooked Hammock Brewery. The place is huge, has several bars and dining areas, an informal menu of pub grub - and they make the beers right before your very eyes.
