Windsor's Flowers to mark 45th Christmas at open house Nov. 19

November 16, 2017

Windsor's Flowers & Plants will open its doors to host the public in a celebration of the holidays and its 45th year in business in Sussex County from 12 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19, at 20326 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach. The Windsor family members and their associates will mark their anniversary and celebrate the holiday season for their annual Christmas open house. There will be holiday specials, beverages, refreshments, door prizes and gifts for everyone.

In 1973, Jay and Janet Windsor acquired McNichols Flowers in Lewes and Crosby's Flowers in Rehoboth Beach. They eventually changed the names to Windsor's Flowers & Plants in Rehoboth and Windsor's Plant Outlet in Lewes.

The Windsors previously opened Lakeside Greenhouses in Laurel in 1972, when Jay was working as a county agent for the University of Delaware. With three family businesses to run, Jay left the University of Delaware to manage them. He returned to the university in 1986.

The Windsors' daughter Jill and her husband Craig Rice continued to work at the 14,000-square-foot Laurel Greenhouses, eventually taking over the management of that location and later, the Plant Outlet in Lewes. Windsor's sold the Lewes Plant Outlet in 2014.

In 1993, after his return from serving in the U.S. Navy, son James “Jim” Windsor joined the business full time, and he co-manages the Rehoboth Beach flower shop and greenhouse with his sister Jenifer Caudill.

The Old Red Barn, approximately 1,600 square feet, now houses the flower shop and offices in Rehoboth Beach. It originally belonged to the DuPont family and was where they kept horses on Bay Vista Road. Bob Raley originally purchased the red barn and relocated it to its present site to open a flower shop. The barn is at 20326 Coastal Highway, Route 1, next to Arena's and Big Fish Grill.

Windsor's Flowers & Plants offers a variety of fresh flowers, indoor and outdoor plants, mulch, gourmet baskets, specialty garden items, gifts and much more. Weddings, funerals and special events are among the many offered services. As the oldest established florist and garden center business in the beach area, Windsor's has served the community for the past 45 years. The family and staff expect to continue serving their many loyal customers for years to come.
