January 4, 2018

James Victor Berg, 74, of Rehoboth Beach, went home to join the Lord Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at Hospice and Palliative Care at Christiana Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He was born Monday, Oct. 4, 1943, in Long Beach, Calif., son of the late Victor and Claudia Mae Berg.

Jim loved gardening, going to the beach, and hosting his family and friends. He always had a positive and teachable spirit about himself that made everyone feel important. He enjoyed dining out and spending time with his family at his favorite destination spot in Cancun, Mexico. As a devoted husband, father, brother and friend, he will be greatly and genuinely missed by all who knew him.

Jim attended Oregon State University where he received his bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering, and was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity.

Jim was recruited while in his senior year at OSU by Diamond Alkali Company, which shortly became known as Diamond Shamrock. He first worked in Muscle Shoals, Ala., where
he met his future wife, Helen. Diamond Shamrock merged with Occidental Petroleum in 1986. During the years, the family lived in several states during company relocations to Texas, Ohio, Maryland
and Delaware, where he retired after 40 years with the company.

Jim will join his beloved wife of 49 years, Helen. Survivors include his lovely sister, Vickie Berg-Burns; his three wonderful children, Frederick Berg, Christopher Berg and Tracey Berg. He also has four beautiful grandchildren, Colton Berg, Brandon Berg, Ashley Berg and Elizabeth Berg.

A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 11, at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington. Friends may begin visiting at 10 a.m., with services to begin at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Mr. Berg's memory to the Alzheimer's Association at WWW.ALZ.ORG.
