February 15, 2018

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present the Metropolitan Opera's live broadcast of Gaetano Donizetti's bewitching comedy “L’Eliser D’Amore” at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 17; 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 19; and 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20. Screenings are now being held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as a recorded presentation one week after being filmed live. Audience members will be allowed to eat and drink concessions sold onsite in the theater. They will also appreciate the wonderful sound quality and the comfortable seats.

The Met: Live in HD season continues with Bartlett Sher's production of Gaetano Donizetti's opera, “L’Eliser D’Amore.” Sher's staging is charming, with deft comedic timing, but also emotionally revealing. Pretty Yende debuts a new role at the Met with her first Adina opposite Matthew Polenzani as Nemorino. Domingo Hindoyan conducts.

“L’Eliser D’Amore” has been among the most consistently popular operatic comedies for almost two centuries. The story deftly combines comic archetypes with a degree of genuine character development rare in works of this type. Its ending is as much a foregone conclusion as it would be in a romantic comedy film today – the joy is in the journey. Donizetti created one of his most instantly appealing scores for this ride. The opera is set in a small village in rural Italy in 1836, when the Risorgimento, the movement for Italian independence, was beginning to gather momentum.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults; $22 for film society members, Met members and seniors 65+; $15 for students with ID, and children 12 and under. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Online reservations may be made with MasterCard or VISA. Tickets will be available at the door for any unsold seats.
