Sussex board could vote on Hudson Fields application

Decision could affect future of entertainment, sporting venue
May 18, 2018

The Sussex County Board of Adjustment is set to vote on a unique application that could have far-reaching consequences on a popular entertainment and sporting venue in the Lewes-Milton area.

Hudson Family LLC is asking the board to clarify whether Hudson Fields is a nonconforming parcel because events occurred at the site long before the establishment of countywide zoning in December 1970.

If the board finds the property is grandfathered, Hudson Fields would not be subject to proposed regulations under a new special events ordinance under consideration by county council.

The property, off Route 1 at 30045 Eagle Crest Road, has been used for decades for concerts, airfield events, Punkin Chunkin and sporting events.

The application is the first item on the board's Monday, May 21 agenda; meetings get underway at 7 p.m. in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. A vote at the April 16 meeting was postponed because a board member was absent.

The proposed new regulations would impose a limit of three events per parcel per year. Hudson Fields hosted nearly 100 events over the past two years, including a new concert series in 2017. At least one concert, featuring Jake Owen, is scheduled on Wednesday, July 18.
