Big turnout for Mayhem in the Mid-Atlantic at Club Milton

July 11, 2018

On a hot and humid weekend June 23-24, 61 remote-control cars raced at the fifth annual Mayhem in the Mid-Atlantic at Club Milton.

Drivers competed for cash prizes and bragging rights at one of the biggest RC races on the East Coast.

Billy Tyree from Rocky Mount, Va., a regular at Mayhem, won the 1/5 sprint car feature.

Lou Cicconi, of Aston, Pa., driving his yellow 75, won the pole and led all 50 laps to win the 1/5 scale Sportsman race and $120.

Buddy and Ruth Cheeks of Woodville, N.C., made the best of their regular trip to Mayhem. Buddy won the 1/5 four-wheel-drive truck race and was crowned the Beast of The East.

The 1/5 scale cars are powered by weed whacker motors and get up to 45 mph around the banked clay oval. Races are scored with transponders and a Mylaps timing system. This year, there are at least 10 new drivers who start by spending $500 to buy a Rovan buggy and then upgrade parts and build or buy a modified or late-model body.
