August 11, 2018

The James H. Groves Adult High School graduated 40 students during its 54th Annual Graduation Ceremony June 6 at Sussex Technical High School. Delaware Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown, was the commencement speaker. She congratulated the graduates on completing their journey culminating in the receipt of their high school diplomas.

Larence Kirby, executive director of the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs, also spoke to the graduates, calling them all warriors for overcoming hurdles. But two graduates were warriors of a different kind. Donald Ray Hirneisen, age 88, a World War II veteran, and Steven B. Hudson, age 74, a Korean War veteran, walked across the stage to receive their high school diplomas. Dave Skocik, president of Friends of Delaware Veterans Inc., presented each gentleman with a Kent County Chapter 850 Vietnam Veterans of America coin.

Delaware Secretary of Education Dr. Susan Bunting and State Director of Adult Education Maureen Whelan also addressed the graduates and applauded them for their achievement while overcoming many obstacles.

On hand to congratulate the graduates were Sussex Tech board members Patrick Cooper, George Torbert III and Marcel Hayes. Reps. David Wilson, Harvey Kenton, Ron Gray and Rich Collins also congratulated the graduates upon receiving their diplomas.
