Meeting to address energy assistance Sept. 17
A presentation on Delaware’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program will be given at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 17, during the Sussex County Advisory Committee on Aging & Adults with Physical Disabilities meeting at the County Administrative Offices West Complex, 22215 N. DuPont Blvd., Georgetown. Catholic Charities Supervisor Barbara Fitzgerald will address the group on the LIHEAP program, which works with low-income families that need help in meeting the costs of home energy, and is managed by her agency. Program benefits include fuel assistance from Oct. 1 to March 31, and crisis assistance in special cases.

The Sussex County Advisory Committee on Aging & Adults with Physical Disabilities is an 11-member panel established by Sussex County Council to be an advocate for programs and policies that benefit older and disabled residents. The committee meets every other month, in January, March, May, July, September and November. All meetings are open to the public.  Its mission is to increase dialogue, make recommendations to Sussex County Council, and to give support, assistance and advice on significant issues and programs that may affect the lives of the county’s aging and adults with physical disabilities populations. For more information, go to www.sussexcountyde.gov/boards-committees.

Water Protection Subcommittee to meet Sept. 21

Milton Streets Committee to meet Sept. 19
The Milton Streets and Sidewalk Committee will meet at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Milton library, to discuss speed limit signs on Tilney Street and Shipbuilders Boulevard. The committee will also discuss parking on Chandler Street, crosswalks and the downtown streetscape.

Dover AFB to conduct accident response drill Sept. 17-19
Dover Air Force Base is slated to conduct a Force Protection and Mass Accident Response Exercise Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 17-19. Access to the installation and facilities will be limited during the day. Personnel can expect significant delays at the gates, but access to base housing will not be affected. 

Dover AFB units have coordinated with local and state emergency responders and law enforcement agencies to ensure proper execution. Throughout the day, multiple emergency response vehicles will be operating on and around the base during the exercise. “The purpose of this annual exercise is to evaluate the ability of units to respond to emergencies and elevated force protection levels,” said Maj. Brandon Ongna, 436th Airlift Wing chief of exercises. The 436th Medical Group will still operate under normal duty hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patients should anticipate potential delays entering and exiting the installation as well as longer-than-normal clinic wait times. Rehoboth Boardwalk committee to meet Sept. 17
The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and Beach Committee has scheduled a meeting for 9 a.m., Monday, Sept. 17, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for discussion about an emergency travel lane on the beach, installation of a public address system on the Boardwalk, installation of more video cameras on the Boardwalk and building a second floor on the Baltimore Avenue lifesaving station.

Rehoboth streets committee to meet Sept. 17

Brent Workman reappointed to board of adjustment
At its Sept. 11 meeting, Sussex County Council unanimously reappointed Brent Workman of Bridgeville to his seat on the Sussex County Board of Adjustment. Workman, who has served since 2002, represents District 2 in the Georgetown area.

Wetland buffers on workshop agenda Sept. 18
Sussex County Council and the planning and zoning commission will have a workshop on possible amendments to the county’s ordinance on buffers for tidal and nontidal wetlands starting at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the administrative offices west complex, 22215 North DuPont Blvd., Georgetown.

Buffers hearing at Sept. 18 Sussex meeting
Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda is continuation of a public hearing on an amended forested/landscaped buffers ordinance and a possible vote on a short-term special-events ordinance. Dewey Beach municipal election set Sept. 15
Three candidates are running for two seats in Dewey Beach’s 2018 Municipal Election: Commissioner Gary Persinger, David Moskowitz and Bill Stevens. Voters can obtain an absentee affidavit from 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, Sept. 14, in Town Hall, 105 Rodney Ave. The election will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Dewey Beach Life Saving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. For more information, call Dewey Beach Town Hall at 302-227-6363.

20th RD Democratic Committee to meet Sept. 20
The 20th Representative District Democratic Committee will meet at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, at Fish On restaurant, 17300 Village Main Blvd., Lewes. Committee members and guests can gather at 5:30 for refreshments and optional dinner. Guest speaker will be former Ambassador Nancy J. Powell, who will reflect on how foreign countries view the many changes in the United States during the past two years under the current administration. The public is welcome to attend.

After a 37-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, Powell retired (holding the highest rank with the title of career ambassador) in May 2014. She has held ambassadorships to Uganda, Ghana, Pakistan, Nepal and India. She also served as director general of the Foreign Service and director of human resources, national intelligence officer for South Asia at the National Intelligence Council, and the State Department’s senior coordinator for avian influenza.  Following Powell’s presentation, RD 20 Democratic Committee will conduct its monthly business meeting.
