UNICO Delaware to collect food items March 16-17

Celebrating feast day of St. Joseph
March 10, 2019

Each year, UNICO chapters celebrate the feast day of St. Joseph, San Giuseppe, March 19. He is the patron saint of the family, and also cares for orphans, unwed mothers, the needy and the homeless. A traditional table altar is set, overflowing with food and bread, known as il pane di San Giuseppe, to be distributed to those in need.

Donations of nonperishable food items will be collected and placed on the altar at St. Edmond Church in Rehoboth Beach after the Masses Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17. The priest will bless these items, along with fresh-baked bread and rolls March 19, and all will be offered to area residents who would like blessed bread to take home to share with family. The remainder of the bread and all nonperishable items collected will be distributed to local food pantries and shelters.

After the 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m. Masses March 17, UNICO Delaware members will sell homemade Italian baked goods, including zeppole, pupa cu l’uovo, ciambellone, biscotti, and a variety of Italian cookies, cakes and breads. Terri Crovato will chair this event and proceeds will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society to further assist local residents. All are welcome.

A major goal of the national UNICO organization is to preserve and promote Italian heritage and culture. With this in mind, the local chapters honor an age-old tradition of caring for the poor and needy, not only during the holidays, but throughout the year.
