The Ursuline Raiders girls’ lacrosse team scored the first goal of the second half May 21 at Dover Stadium and cut Cape Henlopen’s lead to 9-7 with 23 minutes left in the semifinals of the DIAA state tournament.
Cape was pressured, but did not crack, and they scored nine more goals while limiting Ursuline to four for a hard-earned 18-11 victory.
Cape will face Archmere at Dover Stadium at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 23. The Auks defeated Padua in the other semifinal 9-3.
“We have four players who scored over 40 goals this season – Emily Monigle, Meredith Lockwood, Chloe Schaeffer and Alia Marshall,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. “Sawyer Walker scored over 30, and Lola Messick has 30 assists. I feel confident we are going to score goals against anyone.”
Jordan Baerga was a beast for Ursuline, scoring four goals and dominating the draw control.
“We inserted Lindsay Rambo into the game to take the draw in the second half and she did a great job,” Underwood said. “And goalie Laci Dixon had her biggest moments in the biggest game of the year. And we told our defense to take more risks. I felt we were just too tight.”
Assistant coach Leigh Rupar remarked on Dixon’s performance: “When she made a point-blank save on a fast break, the entire coaching staff jumped four feet into the air.”
Dixon was credited with 10 saves in the game.
Goal scorers for Cape were Lockwood with six; Schaeffer, Walker and Monigle each with three; Marshall had two and Messick tallied one to round out the scoring.
Messick also had four assists in the game.
Ursuline goals were Baerga with four, Caroline Knight and Jane Lyons with two each, and Lexi Goff, Lilly Rice and Audrey String with one apiece.
