Bayard Roland Horn, decorated veteran

June 7, 2019

Bayard Roland Horn, 95, of Rehoboth Beach passed away Sunday, May 26, 2019, at his home. He was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Wilmington, son of the late Harry and Edith (Kitzelman) Horn.

Mr. Horn attended Henry C. Conrad High School, class of 1944, but was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was held for a year in a German concentration camp as a POW. He earned many commendations and was awarded both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His love of country never faltered, and he remained a proud patriot for the entirety of his life.

On April 12, 1946, he married the love of his life, Violet "Cis" Horn, thus beginning a lifetime of treasured memories. Mr. Horn continued his education at Goldey-Beacom Business school. He thereafter went on to train as a sheet metal mechanic and established Kirkwood Contractors, which specialized in both commercial and industrial jobs.  Mr. Horn sold Kirkwood Contractors and retired to Rehoboth Beach in 1972, where he then started a custom home and remodeling business. He remained at Bayard Horn Inc. until his final retirement in 1983.

Mr. Horn was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rehoboth, where he served as an elder, Rehoboth Beach Country Club, Rehoboth Lions Club, Rehoboth Kiwanis Club, Rehoboth VFW, and Cape Henlopen Senior Center.  He was also a Mason and Tall Cedar. Mr. Horn enjoyed golfing, travel (cruises, in particular), going out to dinner, and spending winters in Fort Myers, Fla. Above all, he cherished time spent with those he held dear. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Horn was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Violet "Cis" Horn Sept. 12, 2013; his brother, Harry Horn; and his sisters: Thelma Morris, Virginia Edwards and Phyllis Gregg. He is survived by his children: Bonnie Lepson (Tom) of Red Lion, Pa., and Bayard C. Horn (Joan Twinem) of Fort Myers; his grandchildren: Niki Infantino (Coal) and Jessica Mitchell (Drew); his great-grandchildren: Stella Gray Infantino, Violet Infantino, Adeline Infantino, and Juliet Mitchell; and his brother, Harold Horn of Wilmington.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, June 18, at 11 a.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 301 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, where friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
