Manufactured housing resident scholarship entries due June 1

Qualifying residents of manufactured housing in Delaware can receive scholarship funds to further their education. First State Manufactured Housing Association is offering four $2,500 scholarships to graduating seniors, GED recipients or students who are currently enrolled in college, technical schools or trade schools. Full- or part-time registration in an accredited program is acceptable. Award recipients may reapply annually. Eligible candidates must have lived in a manufactured or modular home in Delaware for at least one year prior to the application. Evaluations will consider essay response, scholastic grades, community involvement, honors recommendations and personal goals. Deadline for submission is Tuesday, June 1. Distinguished Young Women applications due May 15

Distinguished Young Women is a nonprofit organization which provides college scholarships and personal growth opportunities to young women who are pursuing higher education. The program focuses specifically on the three areas of scholarship, leadership and talent. The Class of 2022 four-day program for Delaware will be held in August at Possum Point Theater in Georgetown. Girls who are currently juniors may apply by Saturday, May 15. The program includes workshops to help girls build life skills like job interviewing and public speaking. More than $1 billion in scholarships are available nationally to participants each yea. There are colleges who even offer scholarships to young women just for participating. But whether they win a scholarship or not, every girl walks away with new skills that will serve her well after graduation. And it's free to participate.

Request P.E.O. scholarship applications by May 1

P.E.O. Chapter L, Lewes, is currently accepting applications for scholarships to be awarded during the 2021-22 academic year. These are need-based scholarships, and amounts awarded are based on applicants’ needs and available monies in the Chapter L Scholarship Fund.

To request an application, email Joan LaRusso, committee chair, at peochapterlscholar@gmail.com, by Saturday, May 1.

The scholarship fund, established in 2010, has supported many area women. In the past three years, seven women have received scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000, and totaling $12,500, from the Chapter L Scholarship Fund.

To be eligible, a woman must be a high school graduate or pending graduate, a citizen of the U.S. or Canada, and enrolled in an accredited postsecondary program leading to a degree or certification. Priority will be given to Delaware residents. Postsecondary study may be anywhere in the U.S. or Canada.

Alliance launches paraprofessional scholarship

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice is now accepting applications for the 2021 paraprofessional scholarship program. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to an African American/Black Cape Henlopen School District paraprofessional already seeking teacher certification. Applications are due by Monday, May 3. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization Sussex County Inc. is accepting scholarship applications for graduating high school students in Sussex County. The scholarship was established to help support local students who are sincerely interested in perpetuating and nurturing King’s legacy, vision and dream, and the celebration of the only U.S. holiday named in honor and memory of an African American. Eligible students must also intend to pursue higher education at a traditional four-year college/university, a two-year community college, a trade/vocational school or other higher education approved by the organization. The Sussex County Republican Women's Club has extended its scholarship application deadline to Friday, April 30.

Lewes Fire Department scholarship applications due April 25

Each year, the Lewes Fire Department awards a Thornton A. Shipley Scholarship to a high school senior residing within the Lewes Fire District who will be continuing their education at an institution of higher learning. The scholarship application is available on the Lewes Fire Department website at lewesfire.com, and a map depicting the LFD fire district is included. The scholarship is a one-time award of $1,500, good for the first year of the student’s attendance at an institution of higher learning of their choice. In case of a two-way tie, the amount will be divided, $750 per applicant. The deadline is Sunday, April 25. To apply, fill out the linked Google Form or print paper packets. Cape senior nursing scholarship applications due April 22

Graduating seniors at Cape Henlopen High School who plan to pursue a career in nursing are eligible to apply for the Andrea Chomo Smith Memorial Nursing Scholarship. The selected recipient will be awarded $2,000 toward next year’s studies. Application are now available from Kristin Clifton, college counselor, at the CHHS Guidance Office. The deadline to apply is Thursday, April 22. This scholarship is presented to honor the memory of Andrea Smith, a dedicated nurse whose career took her from the Army hospital in Danang, Vietnam, to the trauma unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia before she retired to the Sawgrass North community near Rehoboth Beach.

Scholarship applications due to CRx Construction April 16

CRx Construction is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a college-bound senior at Cape Henlopen High School. Applications are due by Friday, April 16.

CRx’s mission in building custom homes is to be an advocate for its clients. Now CRx would like Cape High seniors to help the company be an advocate for the community.

CRx owner Dion Lamb said, “We love to find creative ways to give back to the community and hope this is a program we can expand in the future.

“We are offering a scholarship to the senior who can give us the best way to use $1,000 to improve our community. Write an essay, put together a presentation, whatever way you feel best presents your thoughts on doing good in the community and how you would implement your idea. There is one catch. If you win the scholarship, you will have to make your plan on how to spend the $1,000 for the good of the community a reality,” Lamb said. “We will offer assistance in the execution of the plan, but we want you to be in charge. The scholarship will not be awarded without execution of the community improvement plan.”

Lamb said, “We purposely created this to be wide open to any ideas and didn’t want to limit the creativity of our students. We love that the winner will also gain the satisfaction of seeing their idea come to life. As a coach and father, I have seen firsthand how smart and creative our local students are, and I can’t wait to see what ideas they propose.”
