Delaware must revise voting laws

May 6, 2021

As a concerned parent, I focused on this issue due to many factors:

• The freedom to vote is an important part of a democratic society.

• Voters should have the choice to vote absentee without having to provide an excuse.

• We need to remove any restrictive barriers to voting.

• We should remove barriers to voting that often disproportionately hinder Black and brown voters.

Currently, the Delaware Constitution only allows absentee voting for a small number of reasons, and the need to amend this document is so that voters can vote without having to provide an excuse. People were allowed to vote absentee without an excuse in 2020 as an emergency measure.

This is not and should not be a partisan issue.

Indeed, the first journey of the constitutional amendment process passed both chambers of the General Assembly with bipartisan majorities.

I am hopeful that both Sen. Gerald Hocker and state representative will seriously consider supporting and voting in favor of this amendment.

This added right affects every citizen of this state.
