Troop 95 recaps 2021 events

August 5, 2021

Scouts and leaders from Scout Troop 95 in Georgetown continued to stay active during first half of the year.

Everyone enjoyed hitting the slopes for the troop’s annual ski trip to Shawnee Mountain in the Poconos.

Modifying the traditional February campout at Redden Lodge, scouts enjoyed a full-day outing practicing outdoor skills including building wilderness survival shelters. The Arrow of Light scouts, fifth-graders who are ready to cross over and join the troop, enjoyed working on fire building and hiking. The day ended with an awesome campfire with lots of singing and cheering.

March found the scouts camping at Lums Pond State Park. At Ommelanden Hunter Education Center in New Castle County, they participated in a round robin of shotgun shooting, rifle shooting, BB shooting and archery.

In April, the troop toured Valley Forge Historical Park. They stayed just outside Valley Forge in Camp Jarvis, owned by Troop 50. While hiking, the group ran into an Eagle Scout alumnus of Troop 95, Doug Myers.

In May, everyone headed to Camp Arrowhead for some fun in the sun in canoes and kayaks. Fishing and clamming were on the schedule, too. Scouts enjoyed learning about sailing and boating around the bay. The Hopkins Ice Cream truck was on hand for treats to celebrate a 16th birthday of one of the scouts.

During the same months, scouts and leaders were also working on service projects and Eagle projects as well as finishing up some partial merit badges. The Order of the Arrow members attended monthly chapter meetings. Patrol leader council members met monthly for planning as did the troop committee of leaders. The leaders held informational meetings on Star-Life-Eagle rank advancement. Scouts held several fundraisers and continued to work on rank advancement requirements. Work continued on the scout storage building.

A Court of Honor  was held May 20 to present merit badges earned and newly achieved ranks. A group of 10 older scouts, ages 15-17, along with Scoutmaster Ben Ables and Assistant Scoutmaster Ron Mills were preparing for their traditional 120-mile canoe trip.

Troop organizers thank all the parents, scouts, leaders and community members for helping make a challenging year still a great one for Troop 95. And they thank Wesley United Methodist Church for its continued support as the troop’s chartering organization.
