Cape High JROTC cadets reach finals in national championships

Teams finish strong in Junior Leadership and Academic Bowl competition
August 26, 2021

Both Cape High JROTC cadet teams were named finalists in the Junior Leadership and Academic Bowl Competition in July, competing against 40 other teams comprising 160 cadets from all over the world.

Students Kathryn Drumheller, Montana Jones, Zoe Peters and Marina Santini competed on the Army Academic team, and Christian Fuscellaro, Isabella Fuscellaro, Isaac League and Jose Mendez competed on the Army Leadership team in the Washington, D.C.-based contest.

Team coach Cape High JROTC Sgt. 1st Class Richard Hurt said he was extremely proud of his students’ performance in all rounds of the competition.

“We are the only school in Delaware to make it seven out of the last nine years,” Hurt said. “Our teams spent the entire school year studying and preparing.”

School district JROTC units may send one leadership team and one academic team consisting of four cadets each to the JLAB Competition each year.

The leadership team answers a slate of questions and challenges based on their knowledge of the JROTC leadership curriculum and JROTC leadership theories. The academic challenge competition consists of a series of questions from standardized tests.

Teams from more than 3,600 schools entered the initial round of the contest, which was conducted online, Hurt said. Another elimination round determines what teams qualify for the national competition.
