Sussex 4-H holds favorite foods contest

March 10, 2012

The Sussex County 4-H held its annual Favorite Foods Contest and Foods and Nutrition Judging Contest Feb. 25 at Sussex Tech.

More than 70 Sussex County youth from the ages of 5 to 18 presented their knowledge of food groups, menu planning, food and nutrition basics, food safety and healthy food choices.

The participants prepared a food item of their choice from the following groups: breads, meat or main dish, fruits or vegetables, dessert, appetizers, hors d’oeuvres, soups, cookies, cupcakes and candy and special diets and provide a recipe which is offered in completion.

They also suggested a meal plan to accompany that recipe and design a presentation that showcased before judges and visitors. In a separate Foods and Nutrition Judging Contest youth tested their knowledge in such areas as consumer education, cooking terms, USDA My Plate and measuring math.

Shown is Amanda Kucharzyk competing in the Senior Dessert division. She discusses her preparation methods of the Red Velvet Cake with volunteer judge Carol Johnson.
