Special Rehoboth meeting is May 10

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m., Tuesday, May 10. The agenda calls for discussion and executive session related to hiring a replacement for City Manager Sharon Lynn. Her last day on the job is Friday, May 6. Representatives from the city’s contractor hired to help with the search will be participating.

Lewes public hearing set May 10

Lewes Mayor and City Council will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, at the Rollins Community Center and via Zoom regarding an ordinance to repeal and replace in its entirety the city’s subdivision and land development code. Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a workshop at 9 a.m., Monday, May 9. The agenda calls for continued discussion on changes to the city’s tree code and on outdoor dining options. The meeting will be conducted in person in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

Cannabis March to return to Rehoboth

Delaware will join dozens of cities and countries around the world to call for the end of cannabis prohibition when the Global Cannabis March returns to Rehoboth Beach at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 7. 

Traditionally held the first Saturday in May, the annual event originated in New York City in 1973 and went international in 1999, with more than 800 cities in 83 countries participating over the past 23 years.

Organized locally in Delaware for a seventh year by Delaware Cannabis Advocacy Network and Delaware NORML, the Rehoboth event will begin with participants gathering at Surfside Park at the north end of the Boardwalk to march to the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand for a rally featuring speeches by local cannabis policy reform advocates.

Delaware CAN will also host its monthly Delaware Citizens’ Cannabis Lobby Day at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, May 12, at Legislative Hall in Dover.

14th RD Democrats to meet May 11

The 14th District Democratic Committee will meet at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, at Iron Hill Brewery, 19815 Coastal Hwy., Rehoboth, with a dutch treat dinner at 5 p.m. Filed 6th Senatorial District candidates Jack Bucchioni and Russell Huxtable will offer their platform presentations.

British Motorcar Show canceled

Due to the forecast for Saturday, May 7, the 2022 Lewes British Motorcar Show has been canceled. The event was slated to be held at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal. There is no rain date.

Sussex council awards nonprofit grants

Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its April 26 meeting: $2,000 to Seaford Historical Society for a Nanticoke Heritage Byway project; $1,500 to Shoes That Fit to help purchase uniforms for students at Lulu Ross Elementary School in Milford and Phillis Wheatley and Woodbridge elementary schools in the Woodbridge School District; $2,000 to Lord Baltimore Lions Charities for its community medical equipment loaner program; and $1,000 to Indian River Soccer Club for a new field striper. There were also county-wide youth grants of $1,000 to First State Community Action Agency for its Par-Tee mini-golf tournament and $1,500 to Optimist International Foundation for its annual essay contest, Youth Appreciation Day and Respect for Law project.
