Special guest Pete the Cat visited Lewes Elementary to celebrate Read Across America Day March 2 thanks to the Zwaanendael Women’s Club.

Excited students flocked to greet Pete the Cat, the popular character in a series of children’s books, as he traveled to classrooms in kindergarten through second grade.

The beloved feline was escorted by Lewes Elementary reading specialist Ellen Uszenski and members of the Zwaanendael Women’s Club who volunteered to read aloud to students.

Club member Kim Ash said this is the first time volunteers have been able to come to the school to read in person on Read Across America Day since the pandemic, when the event was held via Zoom.

Lisa Burnham said it was nice to get out and volunteer in the community.

“This is a tradition for us,” she said.

Uszenski said the club is also supporting the school’s March Book Madness event by purchasing selected picture books. The event is modeled after college basketball’s March Madness tournament, Uszenski said, with students voting on their favorite books each week.

From the selection of books, the bracket is narrowed to the Sweet 16 favorites, to the Elite 8 round, the Final 4, and finally, one book becomes the ultimate champion, Uszenski said.
