The emblem of Memorial Day is the poppy. The poppy symbolizes freedom and the blood sacrificed by our troops during war. Poppies grew out of newly dug soldiers’ graves during World War I in Europe. The American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as its memorial flower in 1921 and started the Poppy Program in 1924. Today, Auxiliary members distribute millions of poppies in exchange for contributions to assist active-duty military, veterans and their families, where financial need is evident.
Unit 17 appreciates the kindness throughout the month of May of many who supported our annual poppy program. We surpassed our goal thanks to the generosity of local businesses, countless volunteers and community patrons who gave generous donations.
Our sincere gratitude to the following Lewes businesses: Bests’ Ace Hardware, Surf Bagel and Redner’s Fresh Market. Additionally, Midway Dollar Tree and Milton Bests’ Ace Hardware support our fundraising efforts every year.
Cape Henlopen High School Army JROTC cadets hold a special place in our hearts. They supported us with many hours by volunteering each Saturday in May to raise funds for our veterans. We want to thank their instructors Lt. Col. Ronald Erale, First Sgt. Philip Webb, and Sgt. Richard Hurt for their leadership in the JROTC program. Post 17 family wishes Lt. Col. Erale a well-deserved and wonderful retirement. We will miss you!
For God and country,
