Lewes has kind, wonderful people

June 13, 2023

About 6 p.m., June 2, I went to Herring Point at Cape Henlopen State Park. I took off my sandals and left them by the snow fence, as I and many others often do. When I returned within about 15 minutes, my Birkenstock sandals were gone. I was so outraged as I sat in my car and posted my sad tale to the I Love Lewes page on Facebook. Maybe I was hoping someone had seen them or maybe I was just venting. By the time I got home, there were several messages on Facebook commiserating with me and sharing stories of others who had their shoes stolen, but, most of all, there were offers to buy me new Birkenstocks, offers to chip in for a new pair and one offer of a pedicure for when I get a new pair.  Within days, 225 people reacted to my post, seven people offered to buy me a new pair and 26 people offered to chip in for a new pair!

I am so grateful to everyone who responded. I am truly humbled. I was so upset when I posted (I'm 77 and I can't afford another pair) and I never expected that kind of response. It was certainly not why I posted, but I am so glad I did. What wonderful people there are here. I am not taking anyone up on these kind offers; someone I know found a used pair online. I just want everyone to know: 1. Keep an eye on your belongings; and 2. I really do love Lewes.
