Bicyclists should walk across Lewes canal bridge

August 15, 2023

I, too, read with great interest the article regarding a possible change from walking bicycles on the sidewalk over the Lewes canal bridge to letting those on bicycles ride across with vehicle traffic.

And I really have to wonder how someone arrived at this decision. Have you actually driven across the bridge anytime during summer tourist season when bicycles are out in full force?

I go across the canal bridge anywhere from one to two times per day. It is extremely dangerous, to say the least, when you have a group of bicyclists riding together, folks on their summer vacation on a bike for the first time, or those folks on bicycles who go down the center of their lane with the vehicle traffic lined up behind them.

Might I suggest driving across the bridge at different times of day so you can experience what local residents encounter on any given day in the summer time? It will definitely give you a different perspective regarding your proposal.
