Tessy is an example of nationwide problem

November 10, 2023

I was so thrilled to see your front-page story on Tessy, the beautiful dog that was adopted after 1,007 days at the Humane Animal Partners Rehoboth Adoption Center.

As someone who volunteers with rescue dogs and cats, I was excited to see the Gazette place this article on the front page. There has always been an overpopulation of dogs and cats in the United States, but sadly, shelters across the United States are seeing record numbers of animals in 2023. By no fault of their own, animals end up in shelters for numerous reasons. So many animals are not spayed or neutered, resulting in more puppies from each litter, and families find themselves financially unable to care for their pets, or their living conditions change. We often say some dogs and cats are simply born into the wrong ZIP code. Fortunately (and thanks to articles such as this one), people are understanding that their next pet is often waiting at a local shelter. I have seen every breed imaginable and will never understand why people continue to support breeders when 2.7 million dogs and cats are euthanized yearly, according to the ASPCA.

Thank you for highlighting Tessy, and may we all open our hearts and homes to a shelter animal. I might add, fostering is one of the most rewarding experiences and allows the dog or cat to feel love and comfort while looking for their forever home.
