Milton Police Department gets new uniforms
Citizens who attended Milton Town Council’s April 1 meeting got their first peek at a new look for the Milton Police Department.
Department members debuted new uniforms at large after officers began wearing them the week prior. The new uniforms feature olive-green tops with black pants.
Chief Derrick Harvey said, “We desired to change to this color scheme more than 10 years ago. We were not supported in that change, so it was not done. The cost of the uniforms we were wearing had doubled in price since 2016, so we proposed the change again.”
Harvey said the choice of colors was both for comfort and to make Milton officers stand out from other departments in Sussex County.
“The combination of dark pants with a lighter-color shirt will help out during sunny days to reduce heat,” Harvey said. “The color scheme also is easier to keep clean while performing duties.”
Officers receive honors
Besides debuting the new uniforms, Harvey also awarded commendations for four officers.
Cpl. Brent Schoof, Cpl. Brandon Smith, Cpl. Emily Botchie and Cpl. Jose Mendez were honored for their service, with Botchie and Mendez being promoted from officer to corporal. Mendez was also honored for participating in a Jan. 10 rescue on Route 5 in Harbeson, where a motorist was pulled from a car that had crashed and sunk in a water-filled ditch.
