School board candidates need to do better

May 14, 2024

A school board election should be an excitement just like higher official offices, but it isn’t. It seems it isn’t important, so why let the public know anything about the candidates? I get the impression that education is not a high priority in Sussex County or the state of Delaware. Adequate funding is hard to come by.

I used the website Vote411 seeking information on the two candidates in my Indian River School District and found that candidates for all the districts did not bother to respond to profile questions. The only thing it showed was “Qualified.” What is their reasoning?

I am an informed voter.  I want to know why a candidate is seeking election for a specific office. What is her/his education level, expertise areas, family, etc. This tells me something about the person seeking office.

I found one site that showed the candidates’ names and no responses, but one candidate had an email address.  She gets my vote. I really know nothing about her reason for running, but at least she showed she was willing to be contacted with questions.

The Delaware political system should have some regulations about requiring candidates to respond to profile questions. Voters are entitled to know what a candidate stands for and their reason for seeking office.
