Funland is open, and the new Rehoboth Beach Patrol headquarters is (mostly) complete. That means summer 2025 is upon us.
Beginning this weekend through the end of August, tens of thousands of people will descend on the Cape Region each week and weekend to enjoy our beaches, attractions and tax-free shopping.
AAA estimates more than 125,000 Delawareans will be traveling 50 or more miles this weekend, a 3.2% increase over last year. Nearly 90% of them will be driving, AAA estimates.
Those numbers don’t include travelers from nearby states. Needless to say, Cape Region roads will be busy this weekend and during the next few months. Our best advice: Let cooler heads prevail; allow out-of-towners some leeway as they navigate our roads. If it’s their first time here, they’re unfamiliar with the area.
That same mindset applies to the hospitality industry – the backbone of our local economy. Expect crowds, longer wait times and perhaps a few service hiccups. It’s still early in the season, with many college students not yet home, and local high schoolers finishing up sports and school events. Many businesses are short-staffed. Be kind to the workers doing their best, whether they’re at the host stand or the grill.
Parking rules are also in full effect. Take a moment to read the signs. If you’re using ParkMobile, double-check that you’ve entered the correct license plate and vehicle information. Parking enforcement is out and doing its job; it’s your responsibility to understand and follow the rules.
Most importantly, let’s not lose sight of the meaning of Memorial Day. This weekend is a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Without their courage, our freedoms wouldn’t exist.
Memorial Day observances will take place around the area Sunday and Monday, May 25 and 26. One highlight is the parade hosted by American Legion Post 17 in Lewes at 11 a.m., Monday, featuring local veterans and dignitaries. Visit capegazette.com/calendar and check the print edition for a full listing of local ceremonies.
Let’s all help kick off the summer season this weekend by being safe and respectful, while also honoring the true meaning of Memorial Day.
