Start Summer Right: Simple Tips for Staying Healthy and Active
Memorial Day weekend marks more than a time to honor and remember—it’s also the unofficial start of summer. In beach towns like ours, this weekend brings an exciting wave of visitors, barbecues, and long, sunny days by the shore. As a local physician, I want to remind everyone that starting summer on a healthy note can make a big difference for the season ahead.
Here are a few simple ways to stay safe, energized, and well as you head into summer:
- Stay Hydrated—More Than You Think
When you're in the sun or being active outdoors, your body loses fluids faster than you realize. Don’t wait until you're thirsty—by then, you're already mildly dehydrated. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and aim to drink water regularly throughout the day. Coconut water is also a great option for replenishing electrolytes naturally. - Be Sun Smart
Whether you're walking the boardwalk, playing volleyball, or just lounging by the shore, sun safety is non-negotiable. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating. Sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats go a long way in protecting your eyes and skin. - Eat Local, Eat Light
Beach towns often have access to fresh seafood and locally grown produce—take advantage of it! Grilled fish, seasonal fruits, and colorful salads make for lighter meals that won’t weigh you down in the heat. Avoid overly processed foods, which can increase inflammation and sluggishness. - Know the Signs of Heat Illness
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke can come on quickly. Symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache, or rapid heartbeat shouldn’t be ignored. Move to a cooler spot, hydrate, and seek medical help if needed. Elderly individuals and young children are especially vulnerable. - Move Safely Outdoors
Morning and evening are the best times for outdoor activities. Whether it’s walking on the sand, paddleboarding, or jogging by the shore, getting outside boosts both physical and mental health—just be sure to pace yourself and take breaks as needed.
Summer is meant to be enjoyed—but safely. A few small steps in early summer can prevent bigger health issues later in the season. So, lather on that sunscreen, stay cool, and savor everything your beach town has to offer—with your health intact.
Wishing you a safe, sunny, and healthy summer ahead!
