Community volunteers tidy Lewes beaches for National Trails Day

June 22, 2025

Volunteers gathered June 1 at Cape Henlopen State Park for a beach cleanup in recognition of National Trails Day. The event was hosted in partnership by the Preserve Our Park Coalition and Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park.

Undeterred by questionable weather conditions, more than 100 participants met at 9 a.m. at the park’s Officers Club before heading out to remove litter along the shoreline and various trails. Event T-shirts were distributed to volunteers while supplies lasted.

Volunteers focused their efforts in two main areas: from bay beach to the fishing pier, and along main beach from The Point to the Navy Crossing. An estimated 100 pounds of trash was collected, making an important impact on the park’s environment.

Following the cleanup, the Village Improvement Association of Rehoboth Beach provided a barbecue lunch for all attendees.
